Tableau visualisation: Global electricity generation
Abstract I have created a Tableau Story using the 2023 dataset from Ember energy think tank to analyse global electricity generation trends since 2000. GDP data from the world bank has been added to look at emissions in relation to GDP per capita. Two static dashboards are below. The full Story with interactive dashboards is here. Global generation and emissions The main positive takeaway is that overall the share of renewables is growing as wind and solar take off across the world....
The price of the SUV takeover – UK car fleet emissions
Abstract There is a lot of comment about SUVs being one of the global drivers of CO2 output and their increased emissions cancelling out gains in automotive energy efficiency. This study looks at their effect on the UK car fleet emissions by analysing the top ten selling models over 14 years. Changes in the weighted average emissions of the top 10 cars is plotted in aggregate and individually by SUV and non-SUV categories, followed by a plot of the weighted average mass....
Cycling: weather, COVID and brown fat
Abstract An analysis of how bicycle rider numbers and behaviour are affected by climatic and other factors, using data from Transport for London combined with weather data from Open Meteo. The effect of temperature on rider numbers is looked at first with expected results, followed by the effect of wet weather which does not produce a linear regression. The reasons for this are investigated. The proposition that COVID made cyclists hardier and less sensitive to bad conditions is then studied....
Solar PV by constituency
Abstract The UK has fallen behind other comparable European nations in the amount of solar PV capacity installed, in part due to less generous subsidies. To see if this makes sense in terms of voting preferences of those installing solar panels, this study plots solar PV installations on a map of constituencies. The non-profit Open Climate Fix has amassed precise location information on solar PV in the UK in order to forecast ultra short-term solar energy generation to improve grid efficiency....
Electric delivery moped rentals
Abstract An analysis of the performance of electric delivery mopeds and how the battery life affects rider behaviour. The data is from the company Elmovo that operated in London in 2019-20. Rental duration and distance are plotted by rental location and the results analysed in the context of the different geographies around the rental stations. Then rental start times are plotted by days of the week to show the demand patterns for the service and corresponding utilisation of the mopeds....
